In my role as editor I have learnt allot of new things. I learnt how to professionally edit videos, and I also have learnt how to use new software such as final cut pro and garage band.

I learnt that shooting and editing films is much harder than it looks, there are allot of technical elements such as lighting sound and locations that you have to consider, all of these things plus a lack of professional equipment make shooting very difficult

I think as the task went on I learnt allot and improved my skills allot. I progressed from not knowing allot about editing to knowing sufficient amount to be able to edit a 3 minute sequence

Overall, I feel my end product fulfils the task given and that it includes creativity and careful thinking and planning. I believe everything fits together well and I am happy with the finished piece. If I were to start again and do things differently I would change things like the storyline and setting, but everything else I am happy with.

Stefan Whyte-linton

Overall our group was very pleased with the making of our final piece. We followed all of the conventions of a thriller film and made sure that we stuck to them such as stereotypical characters and tense music to build up suspense for our setting, characters and mainly are target audience.

Whilst we produced our task i feel that as a group we all worked very well to develop our media skill effectively in the roles that we set our self’s.  I felt that i worked will myself to direct our group in to sticking to our main conventions and making out thriller film successful, and also helping out the  editor to edit our film to a high standard.

If we had to do our thriller again i would work with the same people as i feel that these people have made the thriller film what it is and i feel that no one else could capture exactly what we set out to do whilst we was planning. If we had more time and better quality technology then i feel that we could have made it much better not squeeze everything in as it makes the thriller look cheap and rushed.

Marium Shaikh

Doing the Thriller activity made us learn how to be organised and doing everything on time as we had a short period of time to shoot. I also learnt that before we start to film our opening to make sure that everything is ready and prepared for anything that could go wrong. Because when we were filming our preliminary we did not have our shot list with us which made things more difficult however when filming out thriller activity we did have one which made things much easier.  One big issue we had been agreeing with each other which had caused arguments, but we had to think everything through and had to work as a ‘Team’ which meant working together without any arguments and problems. We always put our work first and took responsibility for ourselves.

Day 2 of filming

Posted: January 30, 2011 in Thriller Production

Today we managed to complete the rest of the shots needed for our opening, all of the shots we did today were  Outside we considered a variety of shots  and we realised that our original idea of having just over the shoulder shots of the killer walking trough the wood would become boring, so we manged to use a variety of different angles to show him appearing and following his victims overall today we managed to shoot allot including ‘high angle’ ‘close ups’ ‘over the shoulder’  and ‘pov’ tomorrow we plan to shoot the last indoor scene .

Day 1 of filming

Today we went to the location we chose to film at. We figured out all of the pros and cons of filming,  after deciding this we chose to film a couple of shot’s today and film the rest of the key shots tomorrow. overall today has been productive we manged to film ‘Handy cam’  shots we also manged to do some ‘High angle’ shots  along with an ‘Over the shoulder’ shot which we shot indoors. tomorrow we plan to do the rest of the filming.

Shooting Requiements

We decided to film in Neasden as there is a lot of urban forest areas also because it is close to were the group lived so it is a well-known area to us  and is easily accessible at night.

we then have to recruit actors for our film so we decided to put out an ad on Facebook asking people to reply to us if they wanted a starring role in outr film, when we got replys we told then the time and place they needed to meet us and gave them our contact details. we then asked them to dress causally as we wanted to look like they normally do, we also asked to bring school bags to emphasises the look of teenage school kids, we did not need any props for this except for flashlights as there was alack of natural lighting.

The day before shooting We organised the times we needed to meet up  and location on Facebook.

we had a meeting to find out the props we would need for filming. we came to a conclusion that we only needed our actors to bring school bags. and that we only needed flash lights due to a lack of natural lighting.

How successfully did you work in your group?

Overall I think that our group worked well together. We all contributed ideas towards the preliminary task and came to decisions efficiently. As Stefan is director we gave him final decision on ideas. By doing this, things were completed efficiently. I am very fortunate to be working with friends, we are honest with each other and we are not afraid to tell each other what we think of ideas. This is both a good thing and a bad thing as being too honest may lead to having group tensions which we had but overcame quickly. When filming the preliminary task our individual skills really helped us, For example Stefan is good at taking charge and telling people were to stand to get a good shot, he was good at solving disagreements between the group and moving the group on to the different locations quickly and efficiently, Marium  is good at making the area where we are shooting look right for the right effect she realised that if the area being filmed in was messy the shot would look cluttered and unrealistic also it would make shooting unsafe as things on floors could make the cinematographer trip over or the actors could injure themselves. Mohammed was the cinematographer so he was telling us how it looked behind the camera he would tell us if things looked out of place and out of shot he would tell us how to position things so they were in shot and make sure props were easy and could be seen. As I was editing I was telling the group ways of shooting the clips to make it easier for me when it came to editing for example throughout the conversation, Instead of switching the camera to the other position after every line of dialogue I chose to shoot the hole conversation at one angle and then the hole conversation on the other. This is an example of group compromise we all had different ideas on how to shoot and we put them together to get a good end result. As a group we had disagreements on how and where to shoot different aspects and different scenes for the preliminary Task but came to an agreement quickly as we had a set time limit to complete the task.

How successful were your organisation skills?

When we first got the preliminary activity and our expectations and outlines I immediately started to think about locations and script. I drafted up the script first and discussed it with the group once we came up with the final idea for the script I started to draw up the story board. I chose the different camera angles for each shot and the actors I wanted to play the two different roles. After discussing that with the group we went to take the different pictures for the story board I told the group to take the pictures in chronological order, this made putting the storyboard together easier as I did not have to search trough the pictures to find the right one. When shooting the task I printed out the story board along with a shot list this made organising everyone much easier as we knew what  we was shooting before we actually got to the location. The only problem we had while shooting was that other groups wanted to use the same location so we had to wait for an area to be clear before got to shoot.

What were your strengths in the preliminary (editing, camera, research…?)

When doing the preliminary task I was allocated as editor, as I was the editor I could not do any editing throughout the filming only input ways to make my job easier when I came to actually editing the shots together. Apart from editing I most enjoyed helping with the camera work and setting up the different shots I also enjoyed researching into the type of conversations was appropriate for the task.

What areas do you need to improve to help you with your thriller film?

As my roll for our thriller film will be editor I think I will need to improve on my editing skills to get results of the best quality. Also I would need to get more experienced by watching others edit and learn from more experienced editors. I will also  take the planning more seriously  as this will help filming flow more properly and it will take less time then is actually needed. I am also improving my skills by going to classes to help improve my skills.
